What is Rice Bran Oil ?
When rice is processed for human consumption,
the hull surrounding the kernel is first removed,
leaving brown rice. Brown rice is usually further
processed to remove the bran layers to produce
white rice and rice bran. The rice bran is heated
and formed into pellets. Oil is extracted, leaving
rice bran oil and deffatted rice bran.
Why is rice bran oil used for horses ?
Firstly, rice bran oil is useful for adding
sheen to the hair coat. Secondly, it is very high in
digestible energy and will add calories to the diet
without bulk. Additionally, rice bran oil contains
naturally high levels of antioxidants, such as
gamma-oryzanal and various forms of vitamin E.
The antioxidant property of vitamin E helps to
maintain cell membrane structure, red blood cell
stability and capillary blood vessel integrity.
Another important function of vitamin E is it role in
maximizing the immune function.
Rice bran oil is the natural source of
gamma-oryzanal. Aside from the antioxidative
function, The Mecrk Index (12th ed., 1996) listed
gamma- oryzanal as an anti-ulcerative. While rice
bran oil should not be used to treat ulcers, it is
useful in the manipulation of the diet to promote a
healthy digestive tract.
What are the advantages of
feeding rice bran oil to horses?
Concentrated source of fat.
One of the biggest advantages feeding rice
bran oil, is that 7 fluid ounces of oil is equivalent to
2 pounds of Rice bran. Thus, 1 gallon of rice bran
oil is equivalent to approximately 36 pounds of rice
bran.
Avoids nutrition and balances.
Rice bran oil contains insignificant amounts
of calcium and phosphorus. Rice bran, however,
can contain era high level of phosphorus and
little calcium, or high phosphorus and very high
calcium depending on the manufacture. The
amount of phosphorus or calcium in rice bran has
the potential to significantly alter the calcium/
phosphorus balance in the total diet.
Safe for HYPP Horses.
Rice bran oil contains very little potassium;
therefore, it provides an excellent source of
additional calories to HYPP horse diet. Some feed
stuff commonly Fed for extra calories, such as rice
bran and whole soybeans contain high levels of
potassium and would not be recommended for
HYPP horses.
What are the advantages of rice
bran oil over other vegetable
oils, such as corn oil?
Rice bran oil offers an alternative for horses
refusing to eat other vegetable oils. Like corn oil,
rice bran oil is excellent for sales prepping horses,
improving hair coat condition and adding calories
to the diet. Unlike other vegetable oils, rice bran oil
naturally contains high levels of lecithins and
vitamin E and provides the natural source of
gamma-oryzanol.
Are there any side effects of feeding
rice bran oil?
Can I overfeed Rice bran oil?
Rice bran oil is safe to feed. No adverse effects
have been found from feeding Rice bran oil. If rice
bran oil is overfed, however, the horse may become
obese because Rice bran oil is rich in calories. As
with any oil, feeding too much may result in loose
stools.
Directions
Two to eight fluid ounces should be top-dressed
on feed daily for an average size riding horse (1200
lbs. Body weight). The amount should be adjusted
for horse weight. With two fluid ounces of rice bran
oil, can be seen in the hair coat. Four fluid ounces
can produce significant weight gain. Eight fluid
ounces will provide maximum benefits to the hair
coat and noticeable weight gain. More can be
added for additional weight gain. As a general rule
of good feeding practices, rice bran oil should be
introduced gradually.
Shake well before using: To ensure full
antioxidant the activity, we recommend rice bran
oil be consumed within 60 days after opening.
